Holding it all together: Create your own shawl pin and slide Presented by Kathy Hepburn
Workshop Description: Knitted wraps, shawls, and scarves deserve a beautiful focal fastener that compliments the piece. In this class you will learn how to craft unique shawl pins and slides out of polymer clay to adorn and hold in place your knitted works of art. Participants will receive an introduction to polymer clay and follow step by step instructions on how to consider clay color selection, prepare and condition clay for project use, apply simple clay techniques to create a patterned and/or textured surface, and craft one shawl pin and one scarf slide. The class will also introduce Color Mixr™ for Polymer Clay, an App that allows a perfect color match between a knitted piece and the polymer clay fastener.
Level of Experience: All levels welcome.
Homework: You might like to identify and bring a knitted piece with your favorite colors and/or one with an open weave that could be held in place with a shawl pin. This piece can serve as inspiration for your in-class creation.
Materials: Bring an Exacto or craft knife, if you have one, and a ruler. Each participant will receive a starter kit for working with polymer clay and creating a shawl pin and scarf slide. A selection of clay colors, including black and white, will be available for you to choose at the workshop. Other materials to finish and embellish your piece will be provided by the instructor. There will also be several pasta machines (for conditioning the clay) and two ovens for baking participants’ clay pieces. If you have experience in working with polymer clay and your own tools, please bring your pasta machine, Plexiglas roller, and whatever other items you prefer.
